Stephanie Eats Sweets

So this blog is going to be about everything sugary I make or order to put in my mouth.

I have quite the sweet tooth and love to cook, so the focus is going to be baking, tasting and making your dessert look aesthetically pleasing.

There also might be pairings with the sweets I post about.

The first item I will talk about is this interesting looking dessert:

At first glance, this looks like a tree ornament or some sort of birds’ nest art piece.

But it really is a tasty dessert.

The nesty part is coiled chocolate, the pecans are spiced with cinnamon and maybe pepper, and the bottom is a shortbread crusted tart, filled with pumpkin mousse and a layer of caramel on top.

You remove the large star anise and cinnamon stick, of course, but do enjoy the gold leafing.

I totally found flecks of the chocolate coil on my face when I got home.

This dessert is more of an autumnal piece, even though I had to eat it in the summertime because it looked so interesting.

I would pair it with a nice brandy or if on the sprightlier side, a Gewurztraminer  dessert wine.

You can find this dessert at Pix Patisserie in Portland, Oregon.

There is only one location, but there used to be two locations with more intimate settings.

I could sit at the counter, talk quietly and feel cozy as I visited with my companions and could hear the bartender recommend specials.

Now you have to endure the clatter of the casual tapas goers and bizarre ordering rules: First, find somewhere to sit, then someone will bring you a wine list, then you go up to the counter and see their selection for the day, unknowing about the contents of the dessert you are ordering.

It really helps to preview this link before you go:

Then you go back to your seat and someone will take your order.

The setting is now pretty boisterous, and the only chance I will give Pix is to try and attend during the winter, order to go or celebrate a special event like Bastille Day.
